Genotype refers to the type of hepatitis C. There are several different types of hepatitis C virus which have a distinctive enough DNA to be labelled as individual. They are known as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 and are further broken down into a, b, c, d, e, f and g. So a person might be told that they have hepatitis C genotype 3b for example.
Knowing the genotype helps to determine the dosage and duration of treatment.
