PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction. Polymerase Chain Reaction is the name of the laboratory process used to test blood for the presence of the hepatitis C virus.
The first test for hep C is a blood test where the presence of antibodies is detected - not the actual virus. If this test comes back showing the presence of antibodies it means that the person has come into contact with hep C at some stage and their body has produced antibodies to try and get rid of the virus. About ¼ of people who become infected with hepatitis C clear the virus without any medical help. This test is usually followed up with a PCR test to confirm current infection with hepatitis C.
