     Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The liver can become inflamed for several reasons.

    As a response to;

    • Chemicals
    • Alcohol
    • Some drugs; prescription, illegal and herbal
    • Viruses

    Inflammation is the body's normal response to infection and toxic stimuli.

    There are viruses which affect the liver. They have been named Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. They are quite different but the main difference is in how they are transmitted or spread from one person to another.

    Viral hepatitis is described as acute or chronic. An acute illness is one which lasts for a short period. It can be serious but the person will recover and not have that illness any more. A chronic illness last longer, sometimes for the rest of the persons’ life. Asthma and diabetes are examples of chronic illness.

    This site provides you with information about how hepatitis is transmitted, how you can avoid it and what services, support and treatment options may be available to people living with hepatitis.

    Currently the primary focus of hepintas is on hepatitis C; however this will be expanded over time. Some basic information about hepatitis A and B is included.
